# Choosing an AI Chatbot for Your Website in 2027: Platform, Build or Hybrid

In mid-2025, our guide to choosing a chatbot listed five popular platforms. A year later, the market looks very different. Intercom has renamed itself Fin and now belongs to Salesforce, and Drift is being retired. Meanwhile, most vendors now charge for resolved conversations instead of seats. So if you are choosing an AI chatbot for your website in 2027, the old checklist is no longer enough.

This framework covers what changed, what platforms charge, what building your own really costs, and when a hybrid approach makes the most sense.

## What changed since 2025

- **Vendors merged or left.** Intercom became Fin in May 2026, and Salesforce completed its acquisition of Fin in September. In March 2026, Salesloft announced the gradual sunset of Drift. Furthermore, Google, for its part, has folded Dialogflow into its Gemini Enterprise for Customer Experience suite.
- **Pricing moved to outcomes.** Fin charges per outcome, and HubSpot switched its Customer Agent from $1.00 per conversation to $0.50 per resolved conversation in April 2026.
- **Chatbots now answer from your content.** Modern bots use large language models that read your help articles and policies, rather than following scripted decision trees.

The lesson from Drift is worth noting. Products disappear, so your conversation history, content, and integrations should be easy to move.

## Three ways to get an AI chatbot for your website

First, you can **buy a platform**. Tools such as Fin, HubSpot’s Customer Agent, Agentforce, Freshworks, Tidio and Crisp give you a ready-made bot, an inbox and human handover. You connect your content and go live within days.

Second, you can **build your own** on a model API from OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google. You then own the retrieval, the chat interface, the guardrails, and the integrations with your systems. That means more work, but also full control.

Third, you can **combine both**. For example, you keep a platform’s inbox and human handover but connect your own AI layer for the hard cases. Alternatively, you build the bot yourself and hand conversations over to your existing helpdesk.

## What platforms charge in 2026

Published prices, checked in October 2026:

PlatformHow it chargesPublished priceFin (formerly Intercom)Per outcome$0.99 per outcomeHubSpot Customer AgentPer resolved conversation$0.50 per resolved conversationSalesforce AgentforcePer conversation or per action$2 per conversationFreshworks Freddy AI AgentPer session$49 per 100 sessionsTidio LyroMonthly bundleFrom $32.50 a month for 50 conversationsCrispPer workspace, with AI credits$45 to $295 a month, covering about 90 to 1,350 automated conversationsChatbaseMonthly plan with message creditsFrom $40 a month for 700 message creditsDenserMonthly plan with query limitsFrom $39 a month for 1,500 queriesMost of these also need a helpdesk or seat plan underneath, so compare total cost, not just the AI line. Above all, ask each vendor exactly what counts as a billable outcome, because the definitions differ.

Chatbase and [Denser](https://denser.ai/) belong to a lighter category. They train a bot on your website pages and documents, and they are the cheapest way for a small site to start. However, human handover comes only on their higher plans, and neither publishes a list of supported languages, so test yours first.

## What building your own actually costs

The model itself is now cheap. Take an example conversation of eight turns, with about 12,000 input and 2,000 output tokens in total. On Anthropic’s Claude Haiku 5.5, priced at $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.50 per million output tokens, that costs about $0.002. In other words, 10,000 conversations cost roughly $22 in model fees.

Prices move, though. Google’s Gemini 3.8 Flash doubles its price on January 1, 2027, from $0.75 to $1.50 per million input tokens. So check the 2027 price list, not this year’s.

The real cost of building sits elsewhere. You need retrieval over your content, guardrails against wrong answers, a clean handover to humans, analytics, and ongoing testing. Each of those takes engineering time, and none disappears after launch. ## Where Southeast Asia changes the answer

Languages come first. Fin’s and Zendesk’s official language lists cover Indonesian, Malay, Thai, Vietnamese, and Filipino. Neither, however, lists Khmer. Furthermore, for a bot serving customers in Cambodia, that alone can tip the decision toward building or combining.

Data comes second. In July 2026, Singapore’s data protection commission issued guidelines on generative AI. They say companies “bear primary responsibility” for meeting their data protection obligations, whether they build a system or buy it as a service. In other words, buying a platform does not hand over your legal duties. Our [data residency framework](https://pegotec.net/data-residency-southeast-asia-2026-decision-framework/) explains where chat data can legally live.

## The risks you own either way

Your chatbot speaks for your company. In 2024, a Canadian tribunal held Air Canada liable for wrong refund information from its website chatbot. The ruling was blunt: “It makes no difference whether the information comes from a static page or a chatbot.”

Furthermore, disclosure is now law in several markets. Since August 2, 2026, the EU AI Act requires that people be told they are interacting with an AI system, unless that is obvious. Similarly, Vietnam’s AI Law requires that users can recognize when they are talking to an AI system.

Customers also expect a way out. In an August 2026 Gartner survey, 87% of customers said companies using generative AI for service must provide access to a human agent. Furthermore, a September 2026 Gartner survey found that only 27% would try a chatbot again after a negative experience. Moreover, a bot that traps people costs you more than it saves.

## Six questions to ask any chatbot vendor

1. **What exactly counts as a billable outcome or conversation?**
2. **How does the handover to a human work,** and what context does the agent receive?
3. **Which languages are officially supported?** Ask for the list, not a number like “45+”.
4. **Where is chat data stored,** and is it used to train models?
5. **How do we export our data and content if we leave?**
6. **How do you tell users they are talking to an AI?** That is now a legal requirement in the EU and Vietnam.

## How Pegotec helps

We help companies choose the right setup first, then build or integrate it. Sometimes that means configuring a platform well. In other cases, it means building a bot that works inside your own systems and languages. Either way, we design the handover to humans and the AI disclosure from the start.

## FAQ

**What is the best AI chatbot for a website in 2027?**There is no single best one; it depends on your needs. Platforms such as Fin, HubSpot’s Customer Agent, Freshworks, Tidio, and Crisp suit standard support questions in common languages and launch within days. Lighter builders such as Chatbase and Denser are the cheapest start for small sites. A custom build suits bots that must act inside your own systems or speak languages platforms do not support. A hybrid combines a platform’s inbox with your own AI layer.

**How much does an AI chatbot cost in 2026?**Platforms increasingly charge per result. In October 2026, Fin charged $0.99 per outcome, HubSpot $0.50 per resolved conversation, and Salesforce Agentforce $2 per conversation, usually on top of a helpdesk plan. A custom bot’s model fees are small, about $22 per 10,000 conversations on a low-cost model in our example, but engineering and maintenance make up most of the cost.

**Should we build or buy a website chatbot?**Buy a platform when your questions are standard, your languages are on the vendor’s list, and you want to launch fast. Build when the bot must work inside your own systems, such as bookings or account data, or when no platform supports your language. Combine both when you want a platform’s inbox and human handover but need custom logic for your hardest cases.

**Does a website chatbot have to say it is an AI?**In a growing number of markets, yes. Since August 2, 2026, the EU AI Act requires that people be told they are interacting with an AI system unless that is obvious. Vietnam’s AI Law has a similar rule. Even where no law requires it, a clear disclosure and an easy way to reach a human are good practice. This is not legal advice.

**Which chatbot platforms support Khmer?**Of the platforms we checked in October 2026, neither Fin nor Zendesk lists Khmer in their official language lists, although both support Indonesian, Malay, Thai, Vietnamese, and Filipino. For a chatbot serving customers in Cambodia, a custom or hybrid build using a model that handles Khmer well is often more reliable. Test with real customer questions before launch.
